Francis Whitfield Beattie
Born: 17th October 1933 St Ninians, Stirling
It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Frank Beattie – one of the greatest servants to Kilmarnock Football Club in its 140 year history.
Frank died on Thursday 19th November, aged 76, after a long battle with illness. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family.
He was a stalwart in the team throughout the Club’s most successful period in the 1960′s, Captaining the League Championship winning team in 1964-65. He was everything, and more, you could want in a one club player. He gave tremendous service from 1953 until 1972, when he retired at the age of 38.
Signed by Malcolm MacDonald in October 1953 from Bonnybridge Juniors, Frank was an inside forward to begin with, but when Willie Waddell put him back to wing half, a star and club legend was created.
Undoubtedly the most popular and highly respected player at the Club throughout the 1960′s, Frank was always renowned for his honest endeavour and commitment to the cause. He was the heart and soul of the team, and a great ambassador for Kilmarnock Football Club.
Frank was the first ever player to play over 600 First Team games for the Club, and only Alan Robertson, the present day Head of Youth, has surpassed that feat (Alan made 607 (603 + 4 s) appearances).
The memory of Frank as a player will live long in the minds of those who were fortunate to see him play. They know heaven has gained another good man – a true Kilmarnock Legend.
